Continuing Competency Requirements

Wyoming uses a practice-hours-based system with sliding CE requirements:

  • Over 400 practice hours in the renewal period: No CE required
  • 200-400 practice hours: 15 CE hours required
  • Under 200 practice hours: 30 CE hours required

Additional Requirements

  • 3 CE hours on responsible prescribing of controlled substances or treatment of substance abuse disorders (all renewals)

Wyoming-Specific Notes

  • No mandatory CE if you practice enough. 400+ hours of active nursing practice = zero CE. One of the most flexible systems in the US.
  • CE is optional, not mandatory. The WSBN explicitly states Wyoming has no mandatory CE requirement.
  • Compact state since 2018. Multistate license available; upgrade requires new fingerprints (3-4 weeks DCI processing).
  • December 31 even-year expiration. All RN licenses expire on the same date.
  • License lapses January 1 if not renewed. Cannot practice after December 31.
  • Nurse Portal is primary communication method. No paper applications accepted.
  • No paper licenses issued. Use online "Verify a Nurse" for verification.
  • Active practice includes volunteering in health/nursing organizations.
  • Retain CE documentation 4-6 years (2-3 renewal periods recommended).
  • CE Broker accepted for tracking.
  • ~8,600 licensed RNs in Wyoming as of 2025.
  • Full practice authority for NPs.
