Continuing Competency Requirements

Choose one of three pathways:

  1. 400 practice hours in the past 2 years (no CE required)
  2. 200 practice hours + 15 CE hours in the past 2 years
  3. 30 contact hours of approved CE (no practice hours required)

Additional Requirements

  • Suicide prevention training — at least one online course required (counts toward CE credit)
  • APRN with controlled substance license: At least 4 CE hours on controlled substance prescribing

Utah-Specific Notes

  • Compact state. Qualifying UT residents receive a multistate license.
  • All RN licenses expire on the same date: January 31 of odd-numbered years. This is unusual — most states use individual expiration dates.
  • Three competency pathways offer flexibility. Most active nurses satisfy the 400-hour practice pathway, while non-practicing nurses use the 30 CE hour pathway.
  • Renewal notice mailed 60 days before expiration.
  • DOPL does not approve individual CE providers. However, ANCC-accredited courses are accepted.
  • CE not reported to the Board — you check off completion of a pathway option. Submit certificates only if audited.
  • Suicide prevention training mandatory for all renewals.
  • Reinstatement fees: $20 if expired within 30 days; $50 if between 31 days and 2 years. Expired more than 2 years: must submit a new application.
  • Online or mail renewal. Paper forms available for RN and LPN; APRNs must renew online.
  • Fees change annually — verify on DOPL website.
