Texas registered nurse licenses are regulated by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON). Texas is a member of the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

Continuing Education Requirements

RN and LPN — 20 Contact Hours Every 2 Years

  • 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education (CNE) in the nurse's current area of practice, OR
  • National nursing certification — achieve, maintain, or renew a Board-approved national certification
  • First renewal: No CE required
  • CE must be from Texas-approved CNE providers
  • Retain documentation for 4 years for potential audit

Mandatory CE Topics

  • 2 hours Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics — required every 3rd renewal cycle
  • Human Trafficking Prevention — one-time course requirement
  • 2 hours older adults/geriatrics — for RNs who work with older adult populations
  • Forensic evidence collection — for RNs who perform Sexual Assault Forensic Exams (SAFE)

APRN Additional Requirements

  • 20 hours CNE in advanced practice role and population focus area, OR national certification
  • Controlled substance prescribers: additional pharmacology and prescribing CE

Texas-Specific Notes

  • Compact state. If Texas is your primary state of residence and you meet Uniform Licensure Requirements, you hold a multistate license. Nurses with multistate licenses from other compact states may practice in Texas.
  • Birth-month expiration. Even birth year = even expiration years; odd birth year = odd expiration years.
  • No grace period. License lapses if not renewed by expiration. Must apply for reinstatement.
  • Renew within 60 days of expiration date.
  • Renewal notices sent via email — ensure your email is current in the Nurse Portal.
  • Texas Nursing Jurisprudence Exam required for initial licensure (not required at every renewal, but jurisprudence CE is required every 3rd cycle).
  • 350,000+ licensed nurses in Texas.
  • Processing time: Approximately 15 business days after renewal submission.
  • If moving to Texas: Must apply for Texas licensure within 60 days to maintain multistate privileges.

How to Renew

  1. Complete 20 contact hours of approved CNE (or maintain national certification)
  2. Complete any mandatory topic CE if applicable
  3. Log in to the Texas Nurse Portal
  4. Complete the renewal application
  5. Pay the $68 renewal fee
  6. Save confirmation and retain CE records for 4 years
