Continuing Education Requirements

No CE Required

South Dakota is one of the few states that does not require continuing education hours for RN or LPN license renewal. There are no mandatory CE topics, no practice hour requirements, and no competency assessments for standard renewal.

South Dakota-Specific Notes

  • No CE requirement. One of the simplest renewal processes in the US — complete the application and pay the fee.
  • Compact state. If SD is your primary state of residence and you meet Uniform Licensure Requirements, you hold a multistate license allowing practice in all NLC states.
  • Online renewal only. You will need your SSN and nursing license number to begin. Use the SD Nurse Portal.
  • No paper receipts emailed. A receipt with confirmation number displays at the end of the process — print it as proof of payment.
  • Application valid for 12 months. If incomplete after 12 months, discarded and must reapply.
  • Temporary permits are valid for 90 days and non-renewable.
  • Name changes require a separate form and legal documentation mailed to the Board office.
  • Retain employment records — while no CE is required, the Board may request employment history and any disciplinary actions.
  • Practicing without a current license or valid temporary permit is illegal in South Dakota.
