South Carolina Registered Nurse (RN) License Renewal Requirements

South Carolina registered nurse licenses are regulated by the South Carolina Board of Nursing (SCBON), under the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR). South Carolina is a member of the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) since 2018.

Continuing Competency Requirements

Complete one of the following within the previous 2 years:

  1. 30 contact hours of CE from a Board-recognized provider
  2. National certification or recertification by a Board-recognized certifying body
  3. Academic program of study in nursing or related field recognized by the Board
  4. Employer certification verifying competency and hours practiced (Board-approved form)

South Carolina-Specific Notes

  • Compact state. If SC is your primary state of residence and you meet Uniform Licensure Requirements, you receive a multistate license.
  • April 30 expiration (even years). All RN and LPN licenses expire on the same date.
  • Renewal portal opens February 1 of even-numbered years.
  • No mandatory CE topics for general RN/LPN renewal.
  • No online CE limitations. All 30 hours may be completed online.
  • CE Broker used for reporting. Completed CE is submitted through CE Broker.
  • Submit CE evidence only if audited. You do not send CE documentation at renewal unless requested.
  • Retain CE records for 4 years.
  • APRN without prescriptive authority: Must maintain national certification.
  • APRN with prescriptive authority: Minimum 20 of 30 CE hours must be in pharmacotherapeutics (including 2 hours on prescribing controlled substances).
  • Background check required for initial and endorsement applications.

How to Renew

  1. Complete one of the continuing competency pathways (most commonly 30 CE hours)
  2. Report CE to CE Broker
  3. Log in to the LLR eService portal
  4. Complete the renewal application
  5. Pay the $75 renewal fee
