New York Registered Nurse (RN) License Renewal Requirements
New York registered nurse licenses are regulated by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), Office of the Professions. New York is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). New York separates "licensure" (lifetime credential) from "registration" (renewed every 3 years to practice).

License vs. Registration
In New York, your nursing license is valid for life (unless revoked, surrendered, annulled, or suspended). However, you must maintain an active registration every 3 years to legally practice. "Renewal" in New York means renewing your registration.
Continuing Education Requirements
RN and LPN — Mandated Training Topics
New York does not have a traditional "CE hour" requirement like most states. Instead, there are specific mandated training requirements:
- Infection Control and Barrier Precautions: NYSED-approved coursework required every 4 years. Must complete at initial licensure and every 4 years thereafter.
- Child Abuse Identification and Reporting: One-time 2-hour requirement. Nurses who graduated from an NYSED-approved nursing program after September 1, 1990, have already satisfied this through their education. Others must complete separately. Updated curriculum (including adverse childhood experiences, implicit bias, and virtual setting identification) was required by April 1, 2025.
Some sources indicate that RNs must also complete 4 contact hours of CE every 3 years as a general requirement, in addition to the mandated training topics above.
APRN
- APRNs with DEA registration must complete at least 3 hours of CE in pain management, palliative care, or addiction every 3 years
- APRNs without DEA registration have no additional specific CE requirements
New York-Specific Notes
- Not a compact state. You must hold a New York-specific license and registration to practice in the state. Compact licenses from other states are not recognized.
- 3-year registration cycle. Unlike most states' 2-year cycles, New York renews every 3 years.
- Renewal window: Online renewal is available during the final 5 months of your registration period (and up to 4 months after expiration).
- Late fee: $10 per month for late renewals. You cannot practice with an expired registration.
- Renewal notice: NYSED mails renewal notices 4 months before expiration and emails 5 months before. Includes a PIN needed for online renewal.
- No paper licenses printed. Use online license verification.
- Address changes must be reported within 30 days.
- If you live outside NY and don't practice in NY: You may attest to an exemption from infection control coursework requirements.
- Lifetime license means you don't lose your credential if registration lapses — but you must reactivate (Delayed Registration Application) before practicing again.

- Complete child abuse training if not previously done
- Go to NYSED Online Registration Renewal portal
