RN and LPN — 30 Contact Hours Every 2 Years

  • 30 contact hours of approved CE per renewal cycle
  • 1 hour on prescription opioid drugs (mandatory every renewal) — must cover alternatives to opioids, risks/signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion
  • CE must be from ANCC-accredited or NJ Board-approved providers
  • Up to 15 excess CE hours may carry over to the next renewal period

New Jersey-Specific Notes

  • Compact state. New Jersey joined the eNLC. If NJ is your primary state of residence and you meet Uniform Licensure Requirements, you may hold a multistate license. Existing single-state license holders must apply for a License by Upgrade to convert.
  • May 31 expiration. All nursing licenses expire May 31 biennially (odd or even year depending on issuance).
  • Renewal notice sent 60 days before expiration.
  • 30-day grace period. You may renew up to 30 days after expiration by paying the renewal fee ($120), late fee ($50), and alternative to discipline surcharge ($5). After 30 days, license is administratively suspended.
  • Self-attestation. You attest to CE completion at renewal. Retain certificates for at least 5 years for potential audit.
  • Inactive option. You may choose inactive status at renewal — inactive licenses cannot practice but maintain standing. Inactive fee is $60.
  • Online renewal through NJ DCA portal.
  • Renewal email: NursingRRU@dca.njoag.gov
