Continuing Education Requirements

RN and LPN — Active Practitioners

Mississippi does not require CE for nurses who have been actively practicing within the past 5 years. This makes it one of the simplest renewal states for working nurses.

Out-of-Practice Exception

If you have been out of nursing practice for more than 5 years, you must complete 20 contact hours of approved CE within the 2 years immediately before your renewal application.

APRN — 40 Contact Hours Every 2 Years

APRNs must complete 40 contact hours of CE every renewal cycle, including 10 hours in controlled substances (if applicable). The Board conducts periodic audits for APRN CE compliance.

Mississippi-Specific Notes

  • No CE for active nurses. If you've worked as a nurse at all within the past 5 years, you have zero CE requirements. Just pay the fee and renew.
  • Compact state. If Mississippi is your primary state of residence, you may hold a multistate license. Compact license holders from other states can practice in Mississippi without a separate license.
  • RN and LPN renew in different years. RNs renew in even years (Sept 1 – Dec 31). LPNs renew in odd years (Sept 1 – Dec 31).
  • Late renewal fees escalate:
    • Late Renewal 1 (Jan 1–31): $100 renewal + $50 late fee
    • Late Renewal 2 (Feb 1–Jun 30): $100 renewal + $150 late fee + $75 background check fee
  • After June 30: License is inactive; reinstatement required.
  • Payment: Credit/debit card or PayPal accepted electronically.
  • Retain CE records for at least 4 years (if applicable).
  • Processing time: 7–10 business days.
