Maryland-Specific Notes

  • Birth-month/birth-year renewal. Your license expires on the 28th of your birth month. If your birth year is odd, you renew in odd years; if even, in even years.
  • 90-day advance window + 30-day grace. You can renew up to 90 days before expiration and have a 30-day grace period after.
  • 30-day extension available. You may request a 30-day renewal extension from the Board if you cannot meet requirements before expiration.
  • Compact state (first member). Maryland was the first NLC member. If you hold a multistate license from another compact state, you can practice in Maryland without a separate license. Background checks are not required when working on a compact license.
  • No paper licenses issued. Print your license from the MBON website.
  • Annual MHCC assessment. Active RN renewals include a Maryland Health Care Commission fee (currently ~$13/year, doubled for biennial renewal = ~$26).
  • Self-attestation at renewal. CE documentation is not submitted with renewal but must be retained for 6 years for audit.
  • Payment by Visa or MasterCard only.
