Continuing Education Requirements
RN and LPN
Maine does not require continuing education for RN or LPN license renewal. You simply complete the online application and pay the fee. This makes Maine one of the simplest states for license renewal.
APRN
- 50 contact hours of CE every 2 years
- Prescriptive authority holders: 3 hours of Category I education on prescribing opioid medication
Maine-Specific Notes
- No CE for RN/LPN. Genuinely zero CE hours required. Just apply and pay.
- Compact state. If Maine is your primary state of residence, you may hold a multistate license. You'll need to complete a Declaration of Primary Residence Form.
- Biennial renewal tied to birthday. Your license expires on your birthday in the renewal year. After your first renewal, you renew every 2 years.
- No grace period. If you don't renew by your birthday, your license lapses immediately. You cannot practice on a lapsed license.
- Online renewal is mandatory. Paper applications are not accepted.
- No physical license cards. Print your license from the online portal.
- Credit/debit card required for renewal payment (Visa or MasterCard).
- Initial license period is at least 1 year and no more than 2 years depending on your birthday.
