Continuing Education Requirements

RN and LPN — 30 CNE Hours Every 2 Years

  • 30 contact hours of approved Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) per renewal cycle
  • All CE must be completed BEFORE submitting the renewal application
  • No specific mandatory topic requirements for general RN/LPN renewal
  • CNE only. Kansas distinguishes between CNE (Continuing Nursing Education) and general CE/CME. CME (Continuing Medical Education) does not automatically count — it must meet the CNE definition.

APRN — 30 CNE Hours

  • 30 contact hours of approved CNE related to the advanced practice registered nurse role during the most recent prior license period

What Counts as Approved CNE

  • Providers approved by any state Board of Nursing
  • Nationally recognized nursing organizations (ANCC, AANA, etc.)
  • Individual Offering Approval (IOA): College courses can count toward CNE, but you must submit an IOA form to the Board for approval BEFORE renewal. Not all college courses automatically qualify.

What Does NOT Count

  • ACLS, PALS, and similar clinical certifications (unless from an approved CNE provider)
  • College courses without prior IOA approval from KSBN
  • General CME courses not specifically approved for nursing CE

Kansas-Specific Notes

  • Birth-year-based renewal. If your birth year is odd, you renew in odd years. If even, you renew in even years. Expiration is the last day of your birth month.
  • Compact state. Kansas is an NLC member. If Kansas is your primary state of residence, you may hold a multistate license.
  • Renewal window opens 90 days before expiration.
  • CE must be complete before renewal submission. You cannot submit your renewal application and then finish your CE later.
  • If license expires: You must reinstate (not renew). Reinstatement requires a separate application, 30 hours of CNE, and higher fees ($150). You may apply for a 120-day temporary permit while completing requirements.
  • No license cards issued since July 2010. Check your license status through the KSBN online portal.
  • Retain CE records and have them available for audit.
  • 30-minute CE courses now accepted. KSBN now accepts approved CNE courses that are 30 minutes or longer.

How to Renew

  1. Complete 30 hours of approved CNE before your expiration date
  2. If using college courses for CNE credit, submit IOA form to KSBN before renewal
  3. Log in to the KSBN Portal
  4. Complete the online renewal application (read questions carefully — they may have changed)
  5. Pay the renewal fee
  6. Print confirmation from the portal
