Continuing Competency Requirements

Georgia offers five options to satisfy continuing competency. Choose one:

  1. 30 contact hours of CE from a Board-approved provider (most common for RNs)
  2. 500 hours of licensed nursing practice during the renewal period
  3. Maintenance of national certification or recertification by a Board-recognized certifying body
  4. Completion of an accredited academic nursing program during the renewal period
  5. Completion of a Board-approved reentry program

No Mandatory Topics

Unlike many states, Georgia does not require specific mandatory CE topics. You choose courses relevant to your practice.

APRN Requirements

  • Must meet the same RN continuing competency requirements
  • Must maintain national certification in your specialty
  • Renew APRN authorization separately after renewing RN license

Georgia-Specific Notes

  • CE Broker is mandatory. All CE documentation must be submitted to CE Broker, Georgia's official electronic tracking platform. Many providers report automatically; you can also self-report.
  • Compact state. If Georgia is your primary state of residence, you may hold a multistate license. If you hold a multistate license from another compact state, do not renew your Georgia license — per NLC rules, compact states shall not renew a single-state license if the nurse holds a multistate license in another party state.
  • Failure to renew by deadline: The Board will administratively revoke your license. You must then apply for reinstatement with additional fees and documentation.
  • Late renewal period: February 1–28 (RN) or April 1–30 (LPN), with $10 late fee. After that, license lapses.
  • BLS/CPR courses do not count toward CE credit.
  • Retain CE records for at least 4 years in case of audit.
  • GOALS portal is used for all renewal applications (not paper).
