Amateur radio (ham) licenses are issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under 47 CFR Part 97. Licenses are valid for 10 years and can be renewed online through the Universal Licensing System (ULS).

No retesting required for renewal at any level.

Key Notes

  • No CE or retesting. Simply file and pay.
  • $35 fee for new, renewal, and vanity call sign applications. Upgrades and address changes are free.
  • Renew up to 90 days before expiration. Operating authority continues while renewal is pending.
  • 2-year grace period if expired — but you may NOT transmit while expired.
  • Expired 2+ years: Must retake Technician exam. Previous class not automatically restored.
  • Email address required on all applications.
  • Two FCC accounts needed: CORES (for FRN/payment) and ULS License Manager (for filing).
  • Beware third-party renewal notices — you can renew directly with the FCC for just $35.

  1. Look up expiration at ULS License Search
  2. Log in to FCC License Manager
  3. File renewal application
  4. Pay $35 via FCC CORES within 10 days
