Wisconsin EMT, AEMT & Paramedic License Renewal Requirements

Wisconsin EMS licenses are regulated by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), EMS Section. Wisconsin has a 3-year (triennial) licensing cycle with all licenses expiring on June 30. Multiple renewal pathways are available.

Renewal Options (Choose One)

Option 1: Current NREMT Certification

Valid on the first day of the renewal triennium.

Option 2: Refresher Course at Wisconsin EMS Training Center

CE must cover subject areas identified by DHS. If completed at your LCA agency, requires form F-01938 signed by applicant, Service Director, and Medical Director.

Wisconsin-Specific Notes

  • 3-year (triennial) cycle. All licenses expire June 30 every 3 years — one of the few states with a 3-year cycle.
  • Wisconsin Intermediate level — unique level between AEMT and Paramedic.
  • Critical Care Paramedic endorsement — 84 total CE hours.
  • Current CPR required at healthcare provider level (within last 2 years). ACLS required for Intermediate and Paramedic.
  • CAPCE-accredited courses accepted for the CE pathway.
  • Local Credential Agreement (LCA) — agency-based CE requires director signatures.
  • Cannot count toward CE: Duplicate courses, clinical rotations, instructor courses, management/leadership, duty performance, preceptor hours, skill examiner time.
  • $50 reciprocity fee for out-of-state applicants.
  • RN/PA/MD equivalency — can function at EMS levels with appropriate training.

How to Renew

  1. Complete one of the renewal options during the triennium
  2. Maintain current CPR (and ACLS for Intermediate/Paramedic)
  3. Submit renewal application through Wisconsin E-Licensing
  4. Upload required documentation
