Vermont-Specific Notes

  • NREMT mandatory for career duration. Vermont requires maintaining NREMT certification throughout your EMS career — not just for initial licensure.
  • License expires 3 months after NREMT. Vermont EMS licenses are timed to expire 3 months after the NREMT expiration date, providing a buffer.
  • Vermont Emergency First Responder (VEFR) is a unique introductory-level certification based on AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR/AED. Expires December 31 every 2 years.
  • Critical Care Paramedic endorsement requires CCEMTP course credential (UMBC) or BCCTPC CCP-C or FP-C certification, plus DMA and Head of Service endorsement.
  • Background screening required for criminal convictions, tax/child support liabilities, and other professional license actions.
  • Submit renewal at least 30 days before expiration — applications submitted within 30 days may not be processed in time.
  • CAPCE-accredited courses accepted.
  • RNs, PAs, and military medics may challenge the licensing exam for EMS certification.

How to Renew

  1. Maintain current NREMT certification (complete all NCCP CE hours)
  2. Submit renewal application through the LIGHTS Public Portal
  3. Complete background screening requirements
