Oregon EMT, AEMT & Paramedic License Renewal Requirements

Oregon EMS licenses are regulated by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), EMS and Trauma Systems Program. Oregon offers two renewal pathways: NREMT recertification or state CE hours. Oregon also has a unique EMT-Intermediate level and a Transitional Paramedic license.

Two Renewal Pathways

Pathway 1: Current NREMT Certification

Submit current NREMT at your level (not available for EMR or EMT-Intermediate).

Pathway 2: State CE Hours

CE hours must be distributed across specific content areas as specified in Oregon's Appendix 1 document.

Additional Requirements (All Levels)

  • Current CPR at AHA BLS Provider level (or equivalent) — must include didactic, skill performance, and evaluation
  • Clinical skills competencies (Section 2 of Appendix 1) if affiliated with an EMS agency
  • ACLS/PALS for ALS providers

Oregon-Specific Notes

  • Staggered expiration dates. EMR expires June 30 even years; EMT/AEMT/Paramedic expire June 30 odd years.
  • 50% self-study limit. No more than 50% of total hours per topic area may come from non-CAPCE, non-instructor-facilitated self-study. Self-study must be approved by agency training officer or EMS medical director.
  • Transitional Paramedic license (since December 2023). For Paramedics without an associate degree — valid for 24 months with one renewal opportunity.
  • Associate degree required for full Paramedic licensure (or 2 years active employment as a Paramedic in the past 5 years).
  • High school diploma required for EMT, AEMT, and Transitional Paramedic initial licensure.
  • Late fee: $40 for applications submitted on or after June 1.
  • Background checks required for all initial and reciprocity applicants (FBI fingerprint-based through Fieldprint).
  • Begin recertification 3-4 months early — recommended due to Oregon's additional requirements.
  • Military extension available for providers on active duty for 6+ months.
  • Teaching credit available for teaching approved topic areas.
  • CAPCE-accredited courses accepted.

How to Renew

  1. Complete NREMT recertification or state CE hours per Appendix 1
  2. Maintain current CPR at BLS Provider level
  3. Complete clinical skills competencies if agency-affiliated
  4. Renew through the Oregon eLicense Portal before June 30
  5. Pay the renewal fee
