North Dakota EMT, AEMT & Paramedic License Renewal Requirements

North Dakota EMS licenses are regulated by the Division of Emergency Medical Services, under the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services. North Dakota requires NREMT certification for all levels and follows the NCCP model. Licenses are tied to NREMT expiration dates.

EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic follow standard NREMT recertification requirements. EMR follows the 2016 NCCP model with 3 components: national, local, and individual.

North Dakota-Specific Notes

  • NREMT required for all levels. ND state licensure is directly tied to NREMT certification — maintaining NREMT is mandatory.
  • License expires 90 days after NREMT expiration. Your ND license is valid for 90 days past your NREMT expiration date.
  • Must be affiliated with a ND licensed EMS operation or have medical direction from a ND licensed physician.
  • EMS Compact member. ND is part of the EMS Personnel Licensure Interstate Compact.
  • Online renewal available through the ND EMS services portal.
  • Renewal notices sent 60 days before expiration.
  • Background check required for initial and renewal applications.
  • CAPCE-accredited courses accepted.
  • Community Paramedic is a recognized licensure level in North Dakota.

  3. Complete and submit online renewal application
  4. Pay the renewal fee
