North Carolina EMT, AEMT & Paramedic Credential Renewal Requirements
North Carolina EMS credentials are regulated by the Office of Emergency Medical Services (NCOEMS), under the NC Department of Health and Human Services. North Carolina uses the term "credential" rather than "license" or "certification." NREMT and NC are separate credentialing entities — you must submit to each independently.

- Operations
Individual Continued Competency Requirements (ICCR)
- Based on deficiencies identified by EMS System, Peer Review, or Self Tracking Assessment Tools (STATS) from EMSPIC
- If no deficiencies, provider may select any EMS-related education
North Carolina-Specific Notes
- 4-year cycle. One of the longer renewal cycles among states.
- NC and NREMT are separate. Renewing your NREMT does NOT automatically renew your NC credential — you must submit documentation to each independently.
- Higher state hours than NREMT. NC requires roughly double the NREMT NCCP hours (e.g., 80 EMT vs. 40 NREMT; 120 Paramedic vs. 60 NREMT).
- CAPCE-accredited courses accepted as equivalent to NCOEMS-approved education.
- Affiliated providers submit through local EMS Systems. Individuals not affiliated with an NC EMS Provider must obtain all CE certificates and submit directly to the Educational Specialist.
- Multiple renewal pathways: CE hours, refresher course, current NREMT + Ohio Trauma Triage equivalent, or passing a state exam.
- Pediatric education emphasis. Recent NCCP guidelines require 10% of total hours in pediatric topics.
- Background checks required per NC General Statute.
- Military deployment: Handled case-by-case — contact a Regional Education Specialist.
