New Jersey EMT & Paramedic Certification Renewal Requirements

New Jersey EMS certifications are regulated by the Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS), under the NJ Department of Health. New Jersey does NOT follow the NREMT NCCP model for state certification — it has its own unique system requiring classroom-based refresher courses.

EMT Certification — 3-Year Cycle

Total: 48 CEUs

  • 24 hours core (Refresher A, B, and C): Three classroom-based refresher courses, each a minimum of 8 hours, conducted by NJ-certified EMT instructors. Must be completed in-person.
    • Refresher A: Assessment/airway/ventilation/respiratory support
    • Refresher B: Assessment and management of the medical patient
    • Refresher C: Assessment and management of the trauma patient
  • 24 hours elective CEUs: Additional EMS-related continuing education

Important EMT Notes

  • Refresher A/B/C must be completed with NJ-certified instructors — CAPCE-only courses are NOT accepted for the NJ core refresher portion
  • The 24 elective CEUs can include CAPCE-accredited courses (when submitted with EMS Form 28)
  • Online content alone is NOT sufficient for NJ EMT state certification renewal

Paramedic Licensure — 2-Year Cycle

  • 48 elective CEUs required
  • Must maintain active clinical sponsorship with a licensed Mobile Intensive Care (MICU) program
  • Must have Medical Director signature
  • ACLS and PALS certification required

New Jersey-Specific Notes

  • NJ does NOT follow NCCP. This is critical — online NREMT recertification courses alone will not satisfy NJ state requirements. NJ only accepts NJ-based CE for state licensure.
  • Separate from NREMT. You can independently maintain NREMT certification for portability, but it does not substitute for NJ state renewal requirements.
  • Clinical sponsorship required for Paramedics. Active sponsorship from an approved NJ MICU program is mandatory.
  • No paper applications accepted. All applications are processed through the NJ EMS LMS portal.
  • Submit no later than 45 days before expiration.
  • Cannot submit more than 120 days before expiration.
  • 50% online content limit unless your EMS agency has been approved for 100% online content by the NYS Bureau of EMS.
  • Medical Director signature required for levels above EMT.
