Nebraska EMT, AEMT & Paramedic License Renewal Requirements

Nebraska EMS licenses are regulated by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of Emergency Health Systems. Nebraska requires NREMT certification for initial licensure and is a member of the EMS Compact. Licenses are renewed biennially with staggered expiration dates by level.

Continuing Education Requirements

CE must meet NCCP requirements and be from approved providers or CAPCE-accredited.

Nebraska-Specific Notes

  • Staggered expirations by level. EMTs renew March 31 of even years; EMR, AEMT, EMT-I, Paramedic, and Instructors renew March 31 of odd years.
  • EMS Compact member. Nebraska joined the EMS Compact in 2020, allowing cross-state practice privileges.
  • EMT-Intermediate sunset. The EMT-I level was set to sunset December 31, 2025. Affected licensees should have either downgraded or upgraded to Paramedic.
  • Critical Care Paramedic and Community Paramedic are newer licensure types now available.
  • Fingerprints required for initial EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic applications (through Nebraska State Patrol).
  • Tuition reimbursement available for initial courses and refresher courses.
  • Reinstatement: EMT/AEMT/Paramedic not eligible if expired more than 3 years; EMR not eligible if expired more than 5 years. $35 reinstatement fee.
  • Applications preferred electronically via email to DHHS.EMSLicensing@nebraska.gov.

How to Renew

  1. Complete required CE hours for your level
  2. Maintain current CPR certification
  3. Submit renewal application (electronic preferred)
  4. Pay the renewal fee
  5. Retain CE documentation for 5 years
