Michigan EMT, AEMT & Paramedic License Renewal Requirements

Michigan EMS licenses are regulated by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), EMS Section. Michigan uses a 3-year renewal cycle — longer than most states — and has its own CE hour requirements that differ from the NREMT NCCP model.

Continuing Education Requirements (Per 3-Year Cycle)

LevelTotal CE Hours
MFR (Medical First Responder)15 hours
EMT30 hours
AEMT/Specialist36 hours
Paramedic45 hours

CE hours must be distributed across mandated categories. Use the MDHHS CE Record Form for your level to ensure proper category distribution.

Alternative: Approved Refresher Course

Instead of accumulating individual CE hours, you may complete a MDHHS-approved refresher course at your level, which satisfies the full renewal requirement.

Additional Requirements

  • Current CPR certification at the Healthcare Provider level (AHA, ARC, ASHI, or ECSI)
  • CE must be from MDHHS-approved programs or CAPCE-accredited courses

Skills and Field Experience Credit

Michigan offers CE credit for documented field skills:

  • 1 Preparatory credit for every 10 successful IV starts (AEMT/Specialist and Paramedic)
  • 1 Airway credit for every 10 successful supraglottic airway insertions (EMT, AEMT, Paramedic)
  • 1 Airway credit for every 10 successful ET intubations (Paramedic)

Upgrade Credit

  • MFRs completing an EMT course earn all required MFR-level CE
  • EMTs completing an AEMT/Specialist course earn all required EMT-level CE
  • EMTs/AEMTs completing a Paramedic course earn full CE credit for their level

Michigan-Specific Notes

  • 3-year cycle. Michigan is one of the few states with a 3-year EMS renewal. More time to accumulate hours, but more total hours to track.
  • MFR level. Michigan still uses the Medical First Responder designation rather than EMR.
  • AEMT/Specialist level. Michigan's Specialist level is equivalent to AEMT.
  • CE from other health boards (Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy) may count if directly related to EMS scope of practice, as determined by MDHHS — but requires Department approval PRIOR to renewal.
  • Application processing time is typically 4–6 weeks.
  • CAPCE-accredited courses accepted.

How to Renew

  2. Maintain current CPR certification
