Massachusetts EMT, AEMT & Paramedic Certification Renewal Requirements

Massachusetts EMS certifications are regulated by the Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS), under the Department of Public Health. Massachusetts follows the NREMT NCCP model and requires a two-step renewal process through both NREMT.org and the state eLicensing system.

Continuing Education Requirements (NREMT NCCP)

LevelTotal CE Hours
EMT40 hours
AEMT50 hours
Paramedic60 hours

CE is split into three NCCP components: National, State/Local, and Individual.

Course Approval

All courses must have either an OEMS approval number (issued by a Regional EMS Office or OEMS) or a CAPCE approval number. Courses without one of these numbers will not count.

Distributive Education

There is no longer a limit on Distributive Education (DE). All CE may be completed using online, self-paced courses. You may also mix and match in-person, virtual instructor-led (VILT), and distributive methods at your convenience.

Two-Step Renewal Process

Step A: NREMT.org (Complete First)

  1. Log in to your Training Profile on NREMT.org
  2. Enter all CE hours into the appropriate NCCP categories
  3. Work with your agency's Training Officer (TO) for profile review
  4. Submit your Training Profile and pay the NREMT transcript fee
  5. Click the "Submit" button on your Training Profile

Step B: State eLicensing (Complete Second)

  1. Create an account on the eLicensing website if you haven't already
  2. Link your certification (enter your MA EMS cert number with prefix: E for EMT, A for AEMT, P for Paramedic)
  3. Start the renewal application
  4. Complete application and submit payment
  5. Submit comes after payment — don't forget this final step

Your certification is NOT renewed until BOTH steps are complete.

Massachusetts-Specific Notes

  • Two-step process is mandatory. Completing only Step A or only Step B will not renew your certification.
  • Training Officer involvement. Your agency's TO reviews your Training Profile and verifies skills proficiency.
  • OEMS no longer issues paper certifications or paper renewal reminders. Check status online.
  • Audit possible. OEMS and NREMT may audit recertification applications at any time. Retain CE documentation for at least 5 years.
  • Special Credit: Health professional courses, college courses, or conferences without OEMS/CAPCE approval may qualify via the Special Credit Request Form — but approval is not guaranteed.
  • Courses that do NOT count: Duplicate courses, clinical rotations, instructor courses, management/leadership courses, volunteer time, or duty time as an EMT.
  • Processing time: 2–5 business days after both steps are complete.
