Maine EMT, AEMT & Paramedic License Renewal Requirements
Maine EMS licenses are regulated by Maine Emergency Medical Services, under the Department of Public Safety. Maine uses the eLicensing system for all licensing and CE tracking. A Maine state license is required to practice — NREMT certification alone is not sufficient.
At a Glance
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Regulatory Body | Maine Emergency Medical Services (Dept. of Public Safety) |
| Renewal Cycle | Every 2 years |
| NREMT Required | Required for initial license (unless licensed in another state); accepted for renewal in lieu of state CE |
| Residency Required | No |
| Online System | eLicensing |
| License Fee | $21 (initial, covers state background check) |
Two Renewal Pathways
Option 1: Current NREMT Certification
Submit a valid NREMT card at your license level. No other CE is required. Your Maine license expiration will be set to match your NREMT expiration.
Option 2: State CE Hours
| Level | Total CE Hours (2-year cycle) |
|---|---|
| EMR | ~24 hours (across required categories) |
| EMT | 52 hours |
| AEMT | 56 hours |
| Paramedic | 72 hours |
CE hours are distributed across categories: Preparatory/Operations, Airway/Breathing/Circulation, Assessment, Medical, Trauma, Obstetrics/Pediatrics, and Skills (BLS and/or ALS).
Skills Waiver (Current)
The Maine EMS Board has waived the requirement for BLS and ALS skills-specific hours (due to availability challenges). However, total hour requirements are NOT waived — you must replace skills hours with education from any other category.
Maine-Specific Notes
- NREMT is strongly recommended. While not required for renewal, maintaining NREMT makes renewal simple and ensures portability. Maine EMS frequently hears from clinicians who regret letting their NREMT lapse.
- State license is separate from NREMT. You must hold a Maine EMS license to provide EMS care in Maine. NREMT alone is not valid.
- No physical license cards issued. Download and print from your eLicensing account.
- CE tracking in eLicensing. Classes taken through Maine EMS programs appear automatically. CAPCE courses, CPR, ACLS, and other external courses must be manually entered with uploaded certificates.
- Pre-approved standardized courses (CPR, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, etc.) are listed on the Maine EMS website. These must be manually entered in eLicensing.
- All CAPCE-accredited courses are pre-approved by Maine EMS.
- College courses may qualify for CEH credit based on applicability to EMS. Requires a minimum grade of C and submission of syllabus for review.
- No residency or agency affiliation required (except for EMD).
- License expires midnight on the last day of the listed month.

- Check your CEH status in your eLicensing account
- Ensure all external courses are entered with uploaded certificates
- Choose pathway: submit current NREMT card OR verify all state CE hours are complete
