Two Renewal Pathways

Option 1: Current NREMT Certification (Simplest)

A valid NREMT certification that exceeds your Iowa certification expiration date may be used to renew your Iowa EMS certification. No additional state CE documentation needed.

Option 2: State Core Topic CE Hours

Complete the required core topic hours for your level:

Iowa-Specific Notes

  • Nationally recognized programs accepted. ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, ITLS, and similar nationally recognized programs completed during the certification period can be applied toward CE hours without needing a separate sponsoring number, as long as the program was completed in its entirety during the current cycle.
  • CAPCE-accredited courses accepted.
  • CE must be from an Iowa-approved sponsor or a nationally recognized program. Check the Iowa Bureau of EMS for approved sponsor information.
  • Reciprocity: Iowa accepts NREMT-certified EMS providers from other states. Reciprocity fee is approximately $50.
  • Critical Care Paramedic endorsement available for paramedics with additional training.
