Indiana EMT, AEMT & Paramedic Certification Renewal Requirements
Indiana EMS certifications are regulated by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), EMS Division, through the Indiana Emergency Medical Services Commission. Indiana uses the Acadis Portal for licensing and does not follow the NREMT NCCP model for state renewal.
At a Glance
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Regulatory Body | Indiana DHS, EMS Division |
| Renewal Cycle | Every 2 years |
| NREMT Required | Required for initial AEMT and Paramedic certification (NREMT cognitive exam); not required for renewal |
| NCCP Model | No — Indiana uses its own CE framework |

Important: Indiana Does NOT Follow NCCP
Indiana has its own CE requirements that differ from the NREMT NCCP model. If you also want to maintain NREMT certification, you'll need to complete NREMT NCCP requirements separately. Indiana state CE requirements alone will not satisfy NREMT renewal.
Continuing Education Requirements
| Level | CE Hours (2-year cycle) | Key Components |
|---|---|---|
| EMT | ~40+ hours | Lectures, critiques, skills proficiency, teaching sessions reviewing Indiana EMT curriculum; plus audit & review hours |
| AEMT | ~50+ hours | All EMT requirements plus additional AEMT-specific content |
| Paramedic | 72 hours | Comprehensive CE across all practice areas |
CE Structure
Indiana's CE requirements include several distinct components:
- Lectures, critiques, skills proficiency exams, or teaching sessions reviewing subject matter from the Indiana EMS curriculum (minimum hours specified by level)
- Audit and review hours (minimum 10–12 hours depending on level) — check with your local district manager for specific requirements
- Update courses as prescribed by the EMS Commission
- Skills proficiency evaluation demonstrating competency in required skills
- EMS Medical Director signature verifying continued competence
New Requirements (Effective July 1, 2025)
- National Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Responder Training — now mandatory for all levels (initial and renewal)
- Mental health and wellness training — required for all certifications and renewals. Must cover healthy coping skills, recognition of PTSD symptoms, and warning signs of suicidal behavior. Can be taken online or virtually.
