Idaho EMT, AEMT & Paramedic License Renewal Requirements

Idaho EMS personnel licenses are regulated by the Idaho Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, now under the Idaho Military Division. Idaho uses the IGEMS system for all licensing and CE tracking. Idaho is also a member of the EMS Compact, allowing cross-state practice privileges.

Key Requirements

  • Agency affiliation required. You must be affiliated with a licensed Idaho EMS agency operating at or above your license level to apply for renewal. Your affiliation must be entered in IGEMS.
  • CE tracked in IGEMS. All continuing education must be entered into your IGEMS account.
  • Background check required. Through the IDHW Background Check Unit (Pay Code: JFPUZW). Can take up to 8 weeks to process.
  • AEMT-85 note: If your AEMT-85 license expires, you cannot relicense at the same level. You will be licensed at the EMT level upon reinstatement.

Idaho-Specific Notes

  • EMS Compact member. Idaho participates in the EMS Compact, giving you immediate practice privileges across other member states without additional applications or fees — just verified credentials and proper local affiliation.
  • Split renewal cycles. EMR and EMT renew every 3 years; AEMT and Paramedic renew every 2 years. This is unusual compared to most states.
  • Renewal application available 6 months before expiration in IGEMS.
  • Reinstatement window: Must apply within 24 months of license expiration.
  • TSE (Trauma, Stroke, STEMI) education available free through the Bureau — watch 3 videos to earn 1.5 hours of CE.
  • CAPCE-accredited courses accepted.
  • Since the Bureau is on a secured facility, call ahead if planning to visit in person.

How to Renew

  1. Confirm agency affiliation is current in IGEMS
  2. Complete required CE hours for your level
  3. Enter all CE in your IGEMS education report
  4. Log in to IGEMS (Acadis Portal) and submit the renewal application
  5. Pay the $35 fee (AEMT and Paramedic only)
