Delaware EMT & Paramedic Certification Renewal Requirements

Delaware has a split regulatory structure for EMS. EMT and EMR certifications are managed by the Delaware State Fire Prevention Commission (through the Delaware State Fire School). Paramedic licenses are managed by the Delaware Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline. This distinction is critical for renewal.

EMT Renewal

  • NREMT NCCP CE: 40 hours per 2-year cycle (to maintain NREMT)
  • Renewal deadline: March 31 (aligned with NREMT expiration)
  • Processing fee: $25

State-Only EMT Certification

Delaware also offers a state-only certification track through the Delaware State Fire School:

  • 12 hours of CE every 2 years
  • Recertification through the Delaware State Fire School only
  • Must be affiliated with a Delaware EMS provider

EMR Renewal

  • 12-hour refresher course every 2 years through the Delaware State Fire School
  • National Registry EMR is available but not mandatory in Delaware

Paramedic Requirements

  • Renewal every 2 years (expires May 31 of even-numbered years)
  • NREMT NRP certification is required (must be affiliated with an authorized ALS agency)
  • NREMT NCCP CE: 60 hours per 2-year cycle (to maintain NRP)
  • Current BCLS and ACLS required
  • Renewed through the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline (separate from EMT certification)

Delaware-Specific Notes

  • Two completely separate systems. EMT certification and Paramedic licensure are handled by different agencies with different applications, deadlines, and portals. Do not confuse them.
  • Must be affiliated with a Delaware EMS provider to hold state certification.
  • EMT recertification documentation must include: approved EMT certificate, NREMT card (renewed), approved CPR card, completed application, and $25 fee. Additional documentation may be requested.
  • Lapsed EMT certification: EMTs have a limited reinstatement window. Contact the State Fire Commission for specific requirements based on time elapsed.
  • Delaware State Fire School is the primary provider for EMR refresher courses and state-only EMT recertification programs.
