Connecticut EMT, AEMT & Paramedic Certification/License Renewal Requirements

Connecticut EMS credentials are regulated by the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH), Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS). Connecticut distinguishes between EMS certifications (EMR, EMT, AEMT) and paramedic licenses — an important distinction that affects renewal requirements.

Renewal Options

EMR, EMT, AEMT: Submit either:

  1. Verification of NREMT NCCP CE completion, OR
  2. Current NREMT certification at or above your level

Paramedic: No specific state CE is required for license renewal. However, paramedics employed in an EMS setting must complete Human Trafficking for EMS training. Maintaining NREMT NRP certification requires NCCP CE completion.

Connecticut-Specific Requirements

    • QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Institute Gatekeeper Training (via Youth Suicide Advisory Board / Office of the Child Advocate), OR
    • At least 2 hours of DPH-approved training on screening for PTSD, suicide risk, depression, grief, and suicide prevention
  • Mental Health First Aid (Paramedic initial only): Since January 1, 2020, initial paramedic license applicants must provide evidence of mental health first aid training from a certified instructor. This is not required for renewal.
  • Human Trafficking Training: Paramedics employed in EMS settings must complete this training (offered by DCF and many EMS educators).
  • All CE programs must be OEMS-approved. CAPCE-accredited courses are accepted.
